How Much Does Carpet Cost?

updated January 3, 2019

The average price of carpet has gone up recently to $2,300 – but that’s because wide difference between lower priced goods and better quality goods.

For mid-priced carpet, you can expect to pay $1,800 to $2,000. Carpet remains a fantastic value and is often used as a lower cost alternative to other flooring options while providing softness and comfort underfoot.

At the same time, for even better quality goods, it's not uncommon for people to pay between $2,500 to $3,500. That's because people are generally buying better quality goods for the few areas where capret is preferred -- like bedrooms. Look for soft fiber systems as well as protection against staining, soiling and pet accidents.

carpet Consumers increasingly opt for better quality carpet.

In general, expect to pay anywhere from $2 to $5 per square foot depending on the quality. Fully installed carpet over pad for your average middle price point should run between $20 to $30 a square foot; better quality goods at $40 to $60 a square foot, and luxury carpet such as wool can cost $60 per square foot and more.

Carpet prices vary widely and have a lot to do with face weight (the amount of fiber used ), the fiber system – polypropylene, polyester, nylon, triexta and wool – as well as advanced treatments such as stain and pet protection, anti-bacterial and odor protection, soft yarn treatments and more.

In a side-by-side comparison of carpets of equal face weight, wool is the most expensive; triexta and nylon come next, followed by PET (polyester) and olefin (polypropylene).
