Flooring’s Little White Lies #3:

Carpet and Traffic Patterns

Carpet can’t hide traffic patterns. And it’s not because carpet can’t stand up to wear and tear. It can.

But the areas where you walk everyday are simply going to show more wear than the surrounding area. Don’t blame the carpet. How would you look if everyone walked all over you?

There are so called trackless carpets, usually textured surfaces that help to minimize the appearance of wear and traffic patterns. Friezes are also popular for this reason. But as for completely hiding traffic and wear patterns, don’t count on it.

If traffic patterns are an issue, the best carpets are level loop and berbers. These constructions hold up the best and are the least likely to show signs of wear.

Better carpet, no matter what style or construction, will also go a long way: High-quality carpet will stand up to wear much better than lower grades.
